The Importance of Fitness This Season

“Regular physical activity benefits both the body and mind,” says the World Health Organization (WHO). “It can reduce high blood pressure, help manage weight and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and various cancers - all conditions that can increase susceptibility to COVID-19.”

There are multiple benefits to exercise for people of all ages:

“It’s also good for our mental health - reducing the risk of depression, cognitive decline and delay the onset of dementia - and improve overall feelings,” says the WHO.

It can also help boost your mental health, too. “For managing symptoms of depression, some research suggests that elevated levels of aerobic activity (exercise that significantly raises our heart rates) may be associated with greater reductions in depressive symptoms,” writes the Department of Psychiatry for the University of Michigan Medicine. 

“Each day is a new opportunity to engage in physical activity and exercise that can bring short and long-term benefits for mood, sleep, and physical health.”

How Gronk Fitness Helps the Entire Family

WHO suggests a minimum amount of exercise each day, based on your age.

Age Group

Minimum Recommended Exercise

Ages 3 - 4

60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity

Ages 5 and under

180 minutes a day in any level of physical activity.

Ages 5 - 17

60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous-intensity physical activity

  • Should include muscle- and bone-strengthening activities at least 3 days per week

Ages 18 and over

150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity OR at least 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity physical activity.


Increased benefits with 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity.

 

Older adults, in particular, can benefit from additional exercise.
